The Ten Commandments

Exodus 20:3-17

I     Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

II    Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, .  .  .  ..

Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: . . ..

III   Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

IV    Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.   (Thou shalt set one day in seven aside for worship & rest.)

Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

V     Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

VI   Thou shalt not kill. (Thou shalt do no murder.)

VII   Thou shalt not commit adultery.

VIII  Thou shalt not steal.

IX  Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. (Thou shalt not lie.)

X    Thou shalt not covet  . . ..”

Jesus summarized these and other commandments into TWO:   Matt 22:37-40

“Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.   38 This is the first and great commandment.
And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

God so loved the world, all mankind, that he gave these ten commandments.  If humanity would obey these, the whole world would be a peaceful place to live.

However, each person has chosen to break God’s law.  God’s statement:  “For all have sinned , and come short of the glory of God;” Romans 3:23

And again He states:  Romans 5:12   “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”

Many people are totally lawless.  They have chosen to “do their own thing.”  Judges 21:25   “ . . . every man did that which was right in his own eyes.”

Many become rich by oppressing the poor. (Credit card companies!)   Many choose to gratify their desires at the expense of others. Some have become cruel tyrants.  The results of ignoring God’s law is suffering and misery for the whole human race.   Fighting, hostility, debasing of women & minorities, war, conquest, and refugees.

God stated that the sinfulness of one generation would result in misery for the next.  (Exodus 20:5)

God has stated that the sin and sinfulness of each individual results in suffering and death.  But, He has provided a remedy for each individual on the planet.  Jesus said:  John 3:16   “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.   For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.   And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.   But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

How can I find God’s remedy for my sin and have a new life in Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:17   “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.   And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;  To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.   Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.   For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”
